2025 September Monthly Meeting Recap/Videos

Quick recap

The meeting began with discussions about technical issues with computer systems, followed by updates on equipment and logistics for an upcoming railroad operating session. The group then covered various organizational matters including membership challenges, financial updates, and changes to the NMRA’s Achievement Program website. The conversation ended with presentations and demonstrations on tree modeling techniques, including detailed instructions on materials, tools, and methods for creating realistic scenic displays, followed by members sharing their experiences with model railroad projects and judging at conventions.

Tech Challenges

The conversation touched on computer updates, with one participant needing help installing System 11 on their laptop. The conversation ended with discussion about an upcoming railroad operating session, where the organizer explained challenges with managing larger groups and implementing shift-based operations to improve efficiency.

Traffic, Equipment, and Meeting Updates

The attendees discussed how traffic and road conditions affected travel times, particularly around construction and paving work in downtown Traverse City. Participants discussed new equipment for the monthly meetings, including cameras and projectors, and their setup for demonstrations. The conversation ended with a mention of an upcoming Zoom meeting and some technical issues with audio and muting during the call.

Model Railroad Club Meeting Updates

The meeting began with introductions from members, including details about their model railroads and layouts. Paul provided updates on technology improvements, including a new Zoom account and video camera for meetings, as well as efforts to digitize past newsletters. TJ announced an upcoming clinic in October where members can receive resin car kits to build at home, with a presentation on building techniques. The group discussed logistics for distributing the kits to interested members, including Walt and Carolyn Wyattville and Michael McDougal.

NCR Region Restructuring Discussion

The meeting covered upcoming clinic presentations and scheduling changes. Rich Mahaney is scheduled for November, while Doug Tagsold will present in December. Craig Wilson’s February presentation on Ann Arbor cabooses will be moved to March. The group discussed financial updates, including a successful National convention that generated approximately $25,000 in surplus. A significant discussion centered on a potential plan to dissolve the current NCR region, with Scott Kramer proposing to merge the region’s divisions into either the Midwest or Mid-Central regions due to low participation from younger members. A meeting is scheduled for November 1st to discuss and potentially vote on this proposal.

Challenges in Attracting Younger Members

The group discussed challenges in attracting younger members to model railroading organizations like the NMRA. They noted that while younger people are still interested in the hobby, they prefer different communication methods and don’t see the same value in traditional organizational membership. The discussion highlighted that younger people can find information and community through online platforms like YouTube and Facebook rather than through formal organizations. The group also examined membership costs and options, including the relatively high standard membership fee of $70 and the lower student rate of $40 for ages 19-25, questioning whether the current pricing and benefits align with younger members’ needs and preferences.

NMRA Achievement Program Website Updates

This portion of the meeting focused on updates to the NMRA’s Achievement Program website, where requirements are now clearly marked in bold text to distinguish them from ancillary information. Several certificates were presented to recognize members’ contributions, including awards for Michael Cipko as Division Superintendent, Jens Hensel in the Service to the Hobby category, and John Campbell who received multiple Master Builder certificates including Prototype Modeler and Scenery. The discussion also touched on an upcoming NMRA rebranding effort involving a new logo that was announced but not yet widely distributed.

Aspen Tree Modeling Clinic

David Zolnierek’s clinic focused on making aspen trees for model railroads, where the presenter provided detailed information about aspen tree species, their growth habits, and their appearance in different seasons. The presenter shared historical context about making aspen trees and discussed upcoming plans for a conifer and aspen workshop at regionals in Holland in October. The clinic included a demonstration of aspen tree making techniques and discussion of supplies and tools needed for the process. The clinic finished with a PowerPoint presentation and distribution of tree models as take-home items. There is a dedicated page with the slides and video for this clinic in the clinic archive.

Tortoise Switch Machine Maintenance Tips

Ernie Barry shared his experience with using Tortoise switch machines in his railroad layout over the past 20-25 years. He explained his modifications to the circuit board to prevent shorts and discussed the recent challenges he faced with newer Tortoise models due to redesigns that made the modifications more difficult. Ernie also shared tips for aligning and adjusting Tortoises, including using heavier wire and proper spacing for turnouts, noting the importance of testing newer Walters turnouts for continuity before installation.

Here’s a video of Ernie’s presentation:

Drake Lumber Model Presentation

Keith presented a model of the Drake Lumber Company station, detailing its history and construction, including the use of reclaimed wood and a steam donkey. He also demonstrated weathering techniques using alcohol and Indian ink on model train components.

Odds and Ends

  • Pete shared his experience judging at a recent convention in New Hampshire, where he received a unique appreciation certificate modeled after a Maine Central stock certificate. We’ll look into something similar.
  • Mark was unable to present due to technical difficulties but mentioned his article appearing in the October issue of Model Railroader magazine.
