George had a couple of requests for a copy of his model railroad photography presentation. An abridged copy appears here.
A few notes:
- Slides 2 & 3 are the Principles of photographing your model railroad. The two most important are needing maximum depth of field possible with your camera (highest F-stop) and even lighting (do not use camera flash).
- Slide 4 shows George’s layout. He included it to show the room lighting – the room in his lower level has no windows and the ceiling lighting shown in the photo was there when he bought the house. He did however change all the bulbs to LED daylight bulbs. Daylight bulbs mimic natural outdoor light, rather than the yellowish light of regular incandescent light bulbs.
- During the clinic, we discovered that you can set the F-stop manually on the iPhone camera. You have to switch from Photo mode to Portrait mode, then click on the scripted F button to get an F-stop. The maximum is about F11, which yields better depth of field, but not as good as with a typical SLR camera.
